“Don’t Waste Your Time Selecting the Wrong Contractor!”
Is getting a home extension right for me?
If your Toronto home is starting to feel a bit cramped, you may be wondering if building a home extension might be the answer to your frustration. Certainly, by adding an additional room – or even several – you will gain more living space in your home, but whether this is truly the right move for you and your family depends on a number of factors.
A home extension is one of the biggest renovations that you, as a homeowner can commit to. It is important to be sure that you are comfortable with any addition plans before the contractors commence their work.
Know what you want
A good contractor will always be willing to share their expertise and make suggestions, but in the end it is your home and you will be the one living with the renovations. That’s why it is important to know what you want. Are you looking for a single room addition – such as a sunroom or a formal dining space? Do you think a second floor addition would best suit your home? By taking the time to carefully consider what you would like for your home, you can make the process a lot less stressful. That doesn’t mean that you can’t change your mind after consulting with the contractor and hearing what they have to say – but at least it gives you a place to start.
Once you can articulate why you are thinking about this kind of renovation, there are some questions that you should ask yourself.
Can you get the result that you want by spending less?
Now that you have an idea of what you want, consider whether you can get the same thing without going to the expense of a home extension. For example, if your goal is to have a family room or a formal dining area, is that possible to achieve with an interior remodel instead – perhaps through making your home more open concept or by renovating a basement or unused attic?
Is moving a better option?
Moving can be an alternative to building an addition and in some cases it may ultimately be the better and more cost effective choice. Of course, you’ll carefully need to consider whether you’re willing to uproot your family. If you love the neighbourhood you’re currently living in, it may be better to simply customize an addition to what your family needs rather than to try and find a more suitable floor plan in a neighbour that you don’t like as well.
Are you comfortable with the cost?
Not only will a home addition be the largest renovation you make – but it will likely also be the costliest. Be prepared to spend between $100 and $200 per square foot, depending on the nature of the addition. You don’t want to regret the decision once the work has already started.
